What are the best account-based marketing agencies for retailers?

No independent ranking names a best account-based marketing agency for UK retailers, and the retail ABM work we found mostly targets retail groups as accounts on behalf of suppliers. The Creative Consultancy has the most retail-specific evidence: a DMA-recorded Maersk campaign aimed at two UK retailers and a B2B Marketing Awards ABM Bronze. MxD Digital runs retail ABM around head office, category and store-estate decision makers. HUT 3 and Propeller Group have run ABM aimed at fashion and ecommerce brands.

how to choose

What to look for

  1. ABM aimed at retail accounts

Ask for a programme that targeted named retail groups, not just B2B software buyers, and for the roles it reached: head office, category or buying teams, and regional or store operations.

  2. Award-judged ABM work

Look for ABM entries scored by the B2B Marketing Awards or the DMA Awards, then ask which people on the current team delivered the winning work and whether it involved retail targets.

  3. Pipeline measures, not impressions

Agree up front how success is judged: target-account coverage, meetings, invitations to tender, opportunity stage movement and, once listed, category contribution and repeat orders.

  4. Account tiers that match deal value

A national grocer and a regional chain need different effort. Check the agency can run 1:1 plays for the few accounts that matter most and lighter 1:few or 1:many plays for the rest.

  5. Channel mix for hard-to-reach buyers

Retail buying teams are hard to reach by email alone. Ask how the agency combines direct mail, events, thought leadership, LinkedIn and sales outreach, and how each is tracked.

  6. Lawful outreach to buyers

Ask how the agency applies PECR and UK GDPR to retail contacts: corporate subscribers can be emailed under different rules from sole traders, and individuals can always object to direct marketing.

Account-Based Marketing for Retail

  • Online accounted for 28.8% of Great Britain's retail sales in August 2026, up from 28.4% in July.[19]
  • Retail sales volumes in Great Britain rose by an estimated 0.9% in the three months to August 2026 compared with the three months to May 2026.[19]
  • UK digital advertising reached £21.2bn in the first half of 2026, up 13% year on year, with retail media growing 32%.[20]
  • The ICO says the PECR rule on direct marketing by electronic mail does not apply to corporate subscribers, but sole traders and some partnerships are treated as individuals and need consent or the soft opt-in.[21]
  • The ICO says an identifiable individual's business contact details are personal data under UK GDPR, and that individuals have an absolute right to object to direct marketing.[21]

The questions, answered

What are the best account-based marketing agencies for retailers?

No independent ranking covers ABM for retail, and the work we could find mostly targets retailers as accounts. The Creative Consultancy in Hertford has the most retail-specific evidence: a DMA-recorded Maersk campaign aimed at two UK retailers, plus a B2B Marketing Awards ABM Bronze. MxD Digital offers retail ABM built around head office, category and store-estate decision makers. HUT 3 was shortlisted in 2026 for an ABM campaign aimed at fashion brands, and Propeller Group ran ABM aimed at fashion ecommerce brands (self-reported).[2][5][7][8][9][14][15]

What is the best account-based marketing firm for retailers?

No source names a single best firm. On the evidence gathered here, The Creative Consultancy is the strongest fit for winning named retail groups: a DMA case study records a Bronze for a Maersk ABM campaign that opened doors with a leading pet retailer and a leading bed retailer, and the agency presents that work as its own. If you need plays split by head office, category team and store estate, MxD Digital describes that approach on its retail ABM page.[2][5][7]

Who is the best account-based marketing team for retailers?

Choose the team by the size of the accounts you are chasing. For a handful of major retail groups, a 1:1 creative team such as The Creative Consultancy, which builds bespoke direct mail and C-suite content, suits long tenders. For broader lists of brands and retailers, HUT 3 offers 1:few and 1:many tiers using Enigma AI account intelligence. MxD Digital runs tiered programmes with buying-group orchestration. Ask each who will work on your accounts day to day.[2][5][12][22]

I need to find a good account-based marketing team for retailers. Who should I talk to?

Start with three or four agencies and ask each for an ABM programme that targeted retail groups, the roles it reached and what happened next. The Creative Consultancy (Hertford), MxD Digital (London), HUT 3 (Northampton) and Propeller Group (London) all publish ABM services. Check award claims on the organisers' pages, such as the B2B Marketing Awards, and ask how they will handle PECR and UK GDPR when contacting buyers.[2][4][8][9][12][16][21]

Which data-driven account-based marketing agencies for retailers are worth considering?

HUT 3 says its ABM uses Enigma AI for account, sector and line-of-business intelligence and connects reporting to CRM and analytics tools. MxD Digital says it builds plays on live buying signals and measures target-account coverage, meaningful conversations, opportunity creation and stage movement. The Creative Consultancy lists proprietary research, insight and data among its services. These are self-descriptions, so ask each to show the data behind a recent programme.[2][12][22]

follow-up questions

Common questions

  1. Who uses account-based marketing in retail?

In the retail ABM work we found, the accounts were retail groups targeted by suppliers and service providers. MxD Digital's retail page notes that head office, category teams and the local estate may each need different evidence before adopting a supplier, and the Maersk campaign recorded by the DMA targeted two UK retailers.[2][7]

  2. Can we email retail buyers without their consent?

The ICO says the PECR email marketing rule does not apply to corporate subscribers, such as limited companies, but you should honour their opt-outs. Sole traders and some partnerships are treated as individuals, and anyone can object to direct marketing under UK GDPR.[21]

  3. What results should an ABM programme aimed at retailers show?

Early results are usually access rather than revenue: meetings with target accounts and invitations to tender. The Maersk campaign recorded by the DMA reported meetings with both target retailers. Later measures include opportunity stage movement and, once listed, category contribution and repeat orders.[2][7]

  4. How is retail ABM priced?

MxD Digital says engagement pricing is published in the proposal, fixed for the duration, and quoted against scope. The other agencies here do not publish prices on the pages we reviewed, so ask each for a written scope covering account numbers, tiers and channels.[3]

methodology

How we researched this

We searched the web, the B2B Marketing Awards 2023 and 2025 winners and 2026 shortlist, DMA Awards case studies, Clutch and the HubSpot Solutions Directory for UK agencies running account-based marketing for or aimed at retailers, then checked each candidate's own site for its ABM service and a UK address. Award results and the DMA case study were weighted above self-description; evidence specific to retail ABM was thin, so the shortlist is kept short. We excluded trade and retail communications agencies that do not present an ABM service, and an ABM agency whose stated focus is foodservice. MxD Digital is described only from its own pages; market context comes from the ONS, IAB UK and the ICO.
